Teton Area 10x10 Book Club - Cradle to Cradle
Posted: 2009-02-09 15:18:00

Thanks to all of you who participated in last night's book club meeting. I am thrilled by the turnout and the engaging discussion that occurred. It is encouraging to know that we live in such a caring and thoughtful community.

I took home so much from last night's conversation and I'd like to share a few things that came up for me:

  • Cradle to Cradle is not anti-recycling; rather it is pro-recycling everything! Everything we produce and consume should be up-cycled.
  • Change begins with individual actions and individual responsibility. We have to be innovators. Heather presented us with the challenge of each taking on a product or habit and finding ways to make them "good".
  • I have to admit that I still get stuck on how to make the paradigm shift from doing "less bad" to doing "good" occur. Some ideas that came up last night are making your own yogurt instead of buying and disposing yogurt containers, sharing items such as books, vacuums, bikes, and cars (check out Zipcar to see how car sharing is working in urban areas), and composting dog waste! Any other suggestions?
  • Please share your thoughts on the this blog so we can continue this discussion!

Other things you might find interesting:

  • Products can undergo a thorough evaluation and certification process to become Cradle to Cradle certified. Visit the Cradle to Cradle Certification website to learn more about the certification and find out which products passed!
  • If you didn't get enough of McDonogh and Braungart from reading the book you can find out what the authors have to say now on one of their many videos available on YouTube.
  • Jackson Whole Grocer (JWG) is now identifying locally produced products in their store with blue labels. JWG is also working with Pursue Balance and the Chamber of Commerce to create an on-line sustainable resource guide for the area.

Hot, Flat and Crowded

We are reading Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America by Thomas Friedman for the next book club. We will meet in the conference room of the Teton County Library from 5:30pm - 6:30pm on Tuesday, February 24th. We will meet on Tuesday, March 31st to discussBiomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature by Janine Benyus.

For those of you who borrowed a 10x10 book from the library and have finished reading it please pass it along to another reader or return it to me so I can pass it along.

Bring your own reusable mug and/or water bottle to the next meeting! We will provide tea and cookies again.

Thanks and happy reading!
