Eco-Capitalism At Its Finest
Posted: 2009-02-13 11:15:11
Have you heard of Terracycle? They're a 7-year old "startup" leading the way on the eco-capitalism front. Their original product was a composted product based around worm waste matter. (It's a plant food type of fertilizer they claim is better than the more popular fertilizers commonly found in homes.) They now have a wide range of eco-friendly products for the home and commercial use.
Is that it? What makes them compelling is from start to finish, the main components of their product are all recycled. So let's start with actual content -- the "fertilizer." Terracycle essentially takes normally composted waste matter and waste streams (like short-fiber paper waste) and combined with worms, produce worm poop. Very useful worm poop. Then they go around to schools and recycle plastic bottles for their containers. What's beautiful is they dont re-process or melt down or reform the bottles, they use them essentially as is (cleaned and stripped of course) -- so when you see their bottles on the shelves at stores, the size is never quite uniform. They slap on a uniform label (where does that material come from?) and then presto, they have a container. The spray component are discards from bottle manufacturers and the boxes are misprints from cardboard companies! What a great idea.
